[신스팝] Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence
신선하면서도 안정되어 있고 댄스 리듬이면서도 보컬로 정신 없지 않은 잘 우아한 곡이라 생각되는 그러나 개인적으로는 매혹적인 점을 느끼지 못하는 이 곡에 대해 할말이 많지는 않다. 그런데 왜 폭넓은 인기를 거두고 있을까라는 의문에 이르러서는 호기심이 발동하고 말았다. 그래 여기저기 찾아보니...
어떤이는 앨범 Black Celebration (86)을 어떤 이는 앨범 Some Great Reward (84)을 꼽는 등 앨범에 대한 의견도 분분하고 Policy of Truth, Personal Jesus, Just Can't Get Enough 등 좋아하는 곡도 다양하다. 그럴 만도 한 게 이들 디페쉬 모드가 히트 시킨 곡이나 앨범이 여러장이고 조금씩 다른 개성을 띠기 때문인 것 같다. 그러나 앨범 "Enjoy the Silence"가 수록된 앨범 "Violator"를 첫번째가 아니라도 두세번째 정도로 좋아하는 앨범으로 말하는 데는 주저하지 않는다.
Depeche Mode - Violator (1990년)
아마도 앨범 "Violator"은 초기 펑크 분위기를 유지하면서 Black Celebration 쯤부터 보였던 어두운 분위기를 담고 있고, 댄스 분위기에 낭만적인 분위기까지 아우르는 식의 대중적 성향을 보여서 그러할 지도 모른다. 그래서인가 실제로 이 앨범은 디페쉬 모드에게 최고의 상업적인 성공을 거두게 해 주었다. 이 앨범에 수록된 "Enjoy the Silence"은 어떠할까? 역시 디페쉬모드의 최고 히트곡으로 알려져 있다. 역시 같은 앨범에 수록된 Policy of Truth는 충성팬?이 많고 비평가들의 후한 평을 받는 반면 "Enjoy the Silence"는 그렇지는 못한 듯하다. 그래 국내는 물론 외국에서의 의견들이 "부담없다"라는 의견이 많다.
사견이지만 결론적으로 앨범 "Violator"와 "Enjoy the Silence"은 상업적인 성향 때문에 80년대 다른 곡과는 달리 대중 속으로 파고 들어갈 수 있었고 80년대와 비슷한 펑크 성향 때문에 여전히 과거 팬들과 호흡을 같이 할 수 있었다라는 것이다. 실제로 디페쉬 모드가 90년대 보이는 상업적인 시발점 정도에 이 앨범과 곡이 놓인 모양새가 되었다.
그래서인지 앨범에서는 "Personal Jesus", "Enjoy the Silence", "Policy of Truth" and "World in My Eyes" 무려 네곡이나 차트에 올랐고 2006년에 재발매되기도 했다. 게다가 이 곡은 Tori Amos, Linkin Park 같은 많은 일렉트로니카, 락/메탈 아티스트가 다시 부르기도 했다. 2004년에 뮤직비디오도 다시 나왔으니 말 다한 것이다. ^^ 원래 비트를 좀 빨리하려다가 늦추었다는 말을 어느 사이트에서 본 듯한데 다시 검색이 안 되어 포기 ^^
