구 소련 해체가 진행되고 있는 1993년 이 곡이 나왔을 때 학교 응원가에도 쓰이고 2002년 월드컵 때도 응원가로 쓰일 정도로 우리나라에서 폭발적인 인기를 끌었습니다. 물론 유럽 각국에서도 아주 호응을 보여줍니다.
원래는 1979년 디스코 밴드 Village People이 부른 곡을 펫 샵 보이스가 가사를 좀 추가하고 편곡을 하여 다시 들고 나왔습니다. 이런 사실을 안지 얼마는 안되었는데, 펫 샵 보이스의 가장 좋아했던 곡이 자신의 곡이 아니라는 점에 대해 적잖게 실망은 했습니다. ^^ 그리고 신스팝(Synthpop) 밴드인 펫 샵 보이스의 이 곡은 사실 엄밀히 말하면 신스팝 범주에 넣기에도 무리가 있긴 합니다. 전자음악을 좋아하는 저로서는 역시 이 점에서 고개를 한번 더 떨구게 됩니다.. ^^ 그렇지만 여전히 멋진 곡이죠.
가사에서 읽히고 동영상에서 보이듯 곡은 이상향을 외치는 듯한데, 서쪽의 이상향으로 가자는 뜻이 바른 방향으로 가고 있는지는 잘 모르겠군요. 이 동영상은 그래미상 후보에도 올랐다고 합니다. 또 일부에서는 이 곡이 소련국가랑 유사하다고 합니다. 실제로 go west라고 부르는 부분을 두고 말하는 거 같은데 글쎄요~~입니다 ^^
