이게 다른 사람들 곡이라면 뭐 이런 곡이 있나 하고 눈을 크게 뜨게 될 겁니다. 그러나 이게 언더월드라면 고개를 끄덕이게 되실 겁니다.

 

반복되는 가사와 베이스라인이 환각적 느낌을 주어 무의식 상태로 떠다니는 느낌을 줍니다. 정신분열 환자처럼 눈도 빨리 돌아가고 고개도 정신없이 끄덕이며 몸 또한 가만이 두지 않습니다. 곡을 따라 몸도 움직이게 되면 아마도 탈진하게 될 겁니다. ^^

Karl Hyde의 기괴하고도 광기어린 그리고 강하고 즉흥적인 듯한 보컬이 눈에 띠는 곡입니다. 게다가 애시드 분위기의 강한 베이스라인. 가사는 메아리 같이 계속 나오고 노이즈 또한 아래서 계속 반복되어 나옵니다. 여기서 일렉트로닉의 반복되고 기계적인 그리고 "중독성 있는" 베이스라인은 Giorgio Moroder는 1977년 도나 섬머의 디스코 곡 "I Feel Love"에서 시도했는데 이것이 Ferry Corsten, Goldfrap 등의 곡에서도 나타나듯이 사방에서 쓰여집니다. 하여간 King of Snake의 이러한 경향은 Cowgirl이 담긴 93년도 앨범 dubnobasswithmyheadman에서도 확인해 볼 수 있습니다.

 

1996년 Trainspotting에 나온 Born Slippy가 엄청나게 큰 인기를 끈 이후 1999년 나온 앨범 Beaucoup Fish 또한 많은 주목을 받았습니다. 이 앨범의 새로운 시도와 세련된 사운드에도 불구하고 평은 좋지 않았다고 합니다. 이 곡은 영국 싱글차트 17위까지 올라갔다 합니다. 이 앨범에는 언더월드 답지 않아 보이는 다운템포 성향의 곡 Jumbo도 수록되었습니다.

 

Beaucoup Fish (1999년)

 

1996년 Born Slippy가 영화 Trainspotting에 삽입되면서 우리나라에 소개된 Underworld는 1980년 Karl Hyde, Rick Smith의 2인조로 출발한 영국 전자음악 팀입니다. 초기 일렉트로팝, 신스팝 경향에서 1991년 Darren Emerson을 영입하면서 급격히 댄스성향으로 바뀝니다. 그리고 나온 앨범 dubnobasswithmyheadman는 크게 성공을 하고 영화 Transpotting에 Born Slippy가 삽입되면서 전세계적인 인기를 누리게 됩니다. 그  여세를 몰아 Beaucoup Fish를 미국 앨범차트에 올렸습니다. 2000년 공연 앨범 Everything Everything이 나와 전성기를 구가하게 됩니다. 그러나 그해 멤버들 알력이 있었는지 다렌 에머슨이 떠나고 침체기를 맞았으나 2007년 Crocodile이 인기를 끌며 여전히 건재하다는 걸 알려주고 있습니다. 현재는 Darren Price가 참여하여 3인조로 활동하고 있습니다.
