Ultravox - Vienna

 

1980년대초 New Romantic 음악을 꼽으라면 이 곡이 빠지지 않듯이 Ultravox 하면 가장 먼저 떠오르는 곡이 Vienna이다. 비엔나는 피아노와 바이올린 그리고 Midge Ure의 긴장감 있는 보컬이 돋보이는 발라드 풍이다. 보컬 John Foxx와 기타 주자 Robin Simon가 떠난 Ultravox는 Midge Ure를 맞이 하고 새로운 모습을 하게 되는데 특히 이곡은 본국인 영국 차트에서 2위를 비롯 3개국에서 1위 등 상업적으로도 큰 성공을 했다.

전체적으로 사운드의 두터움을 느낄 수 있는데, Gery Numan이나 Kraftwerk가 연상되는 로보트 같은 그리고 그러다가 쭉 상승하는 목소리, 바이올린 소리, 구슬 떨어지듯 튀어 다니는 피아노, 압축공기 빠지듯 나오는 쇳소리... 이 모든 소리가 절제된 상태로 따로따로 또는 같이 움직인다. 곡 전체에서 속도의 완급을 느낄 수 있는데 절제된 이완 상태에서 Midge Ure의 Vienna의 외침 이후 고조되면서 긴장감을 느끼게 된다. 특히 이 부분은 느린 상태에서 현소리와 함께 빨라지는데 곡의 시간적 구성에 고개가 뒤로 젓혀진다. 부분적으로도 모든 악기가 뒤로 몰리듯이 빨라지거나 음이 높아지져서 숨을 깔딱깔딱하게 만든다.
